comments: Brothers, I would like to commend the people that put this sight together . I already saw a name from Lumby I recognize. It is a small world and all the more reason for us tradesmen to remain unified. There are enough problems with our current governments. Our own members need to stick together and not let our employers divide and conquer. All members should take the time to read their Collective Agreements and ask questions to their stewards and business agents. Without educating our members on their rights we suffer many hardships that inevitably effect our families and loved ones. I look forward in the future to working with your local until then, I express my gratitude to your local and all the business agents and stewards that work towards our fair cause.
    thankyou Gord Ivers

what are you saying? - Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada
comments: Over a year has passed since word of trouble inside Local Union 424 Business Office became public knowledge. For over a year the membership has been involved in a highly emotional debate on the subject. The Business office claimed that because the issue involved charges under the IBEW Constitution they could not discuss the situation, other than the reading of the charges at the meeting....and they actually think that the IBEW constitution extends outside a union meeting to violate their Canadian right to freedom of speech!

Those among the membership who disagreed with the charges took advantage of this situation and widely distributed their version of the events on our job-sites and other forums such as this one.Their version was clearly one-sided and often misrepresented the truth. The same can be said of the charging parties version and those that agreed with the decision who spread their misrepresentation of the truth.

This group has also taken advantage of every opportunity to create dissention within the brotherhood. What do you mean by dissention? Is dissention, by definition, not simply a difference of opinion? Something that everybody has a right to. Can the charging party not stand up to criticism? Some even going so far as to openly recruit members for a rival union on our jobsites. ?????Really? Talk about misrepresentation of truth. More like tall tales. I have been working the tarsands at syncrude for 3 years now, and have never come across this so-called recruitment. I only first heard of this in the latest 424 newsletter. This in-fighting has caused great damage to the position of our great Local?? Really? ...and what damage is that? Could you explain yourself or will you continue to accuse and not provide some substance of facts? , it has limited the ability of the Business Office to rally the membership against the ever increasingly hostile positions taken by the owner/clients in our area. ???? Limited??? aha, ha, ha, ha....could you please explain just what our 424 Business Office has done or suggested to our membership as to rallying???? my job steward has barely relayed any rallying information to us at Syncrude.....but hey, nice attempt at providing damage control to our in-effective 424 officers - as for our 424 union membership...we will do just fine without them when we vote them out 1 1/2 years from now...bye bye

It's Time - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
comments: Business Manager Admits Guilt to all Charges

Over a year has passed since word of trouble inside Local Union 424 Business Office became public knowledge. For over a year the membership has been involved in a highly emotional debate on the subject. The Business office claimed that because the issue involved charges under the IBEW Constitution they could not discuss the situation, other than the reading of the charges at the meeting.

Those among the membership who disagreed with the charges took advantage of this situation and widely distributed their version of the events on our job-sites and other forums such as this one.Their version was clearly one-sided and often misrepresented the truth.

This group has also taken advantage of every opportunity to create dissention within the brotherhood. Some even going so far as to openly recruit members for a rival union on our jobsites. This in-fighting has caused great damage to the position of our great Local, it has limited the ability of the Business Office to rally the membership against the ever increasingly hostile positions taken by the owner/clients in our area.

International Vice-President Lee has just released the findings of the second trial of the Officer involved and remarkably this officer admitted to guilt on all counts. (One charge was dismissed as being un-timely, even though he admitted guilt to this offence as well).

The record shows that both the Local Union President and the Area International Representative repeatedly warned this Officer that his actions were contrary to his obligations under the Constitution, but he continued to ignore this direction. It was only after being given repeated opportunities to correct his inappropriate behavior that charges were filed. It my heartfelt hope that this group will now accept the fact that given the repeated direction given to this officer and his continued refusal to follow this direction that the Local Union President had no choice but to proceed to charges. It is also my hope that this group will accept IVP Lee's decision and the officer's admission of guilt as cause to cease their disruptive and damaging behavior.

It is only a year and a half until nominations and that will be this group's opportunity to effect the changes to personnel they are looking for, but in the meantime, if they would spend their time and energy on solving the problems the Local Union now faces, instead of repeatedly pointing out what is wrong, we would all be stronger for their efforts.

Alberta TURF - Fort MacMurray, Alberta, Canada
comments: The history of 424 - June 2004 to present

    Posted By: the eyeopener
    Date: Sunday, 23 October 2005, at 1:36 a.m.

Just to keep the NEW readers abreast of what has occurred.

The corporate entity known as IBEW L.U. 424 had already made up their mind as to who would be the next Business Manager and were pretty confident of winning. Yet they had not expected such a popular rumble of support for the new contender that decided to run.

Just to make sure that this contender would not be a threat, they sent out one of their machine-heads to write some slander (3 memos) about him to make him unfavorable to the members. If it had an effect it made matters worse for them as he won overwhelmingly with twice as many votes than the corporate candidate.

The disappointment was easy to see through their body language when the announcement was made that the membership favored the new contender and he won.

Apparently not satisfied with a freely democratically elected Business Manager, the corporate officers had a plan but they were all too hasty and over-confident and jumped at the first opportunity to charge him over minor procedural errors. Why the haste? Why the offensively trumped up charges? Why lie? (supposedly it was brought forth as evidence in the retrial that the president had previously brought forth charges to the International officer bit the I.O. told him that they would not stick???? purposely working agianst the Business Manager?)

The story floating around seems to be that as soon as the corporate officers realized that the new Business Manager was going to do financial audits the alarms bells went off and they panicked. A little too hasty and over-confident as the charges were so ridiculous! Fraud and Misappropriation of funds? Still to this day, NOT PROVEN!

Not satisfied with the unjust charges and realizing that some appointees were going to be dismissed, they concocted the scheme (scam) to apply to be represented by IBEW L.U. 348. This was to protect them until after the trial and decision to remove the new Business Manager was complete.

You see, part of the Labour Laws for application for representation calls for no change to the employee roster without just cause.

All was well and in place for the Corporates as they coasted to the Trial date for the new Business Manager.

Then something else happened. Some members of 424 discovered a conspiracy against the new Business Manager that involved the Investigating Officer and the Corporations' candidate that lost the campaign for the position of Business Manager.

Yes, these 2 were discovered in a support room that was rented for the President who had charged the Business Manager.

Finally the decision from the kangaroo court came to remove the Business Manager and 5 minutes after that the application to be represented by L.U. 348 was dropped.

Shortly after that, the good members who blew the whistle on the conspiring Investigating Officer and member who lost in the bid for the position of Business Manager, were charged with totally false accusations and lies. (the worst being the Work Stoppage LIE!)

Our Business Manager went to the Alberta Labour Relations Board and was reinstated with pay but under suspension until an agreed upon, by both parties, IBEW retrial was done.

Complications arose that the ALRB recognized as delays caused by both sides and an initial appeal from the IBEW to stop payment was denied.

The sad loss of the Business Managers' lawyer, the late Brent Gawne, occurred and curiously the ALRB stopped payment of the Business Manager despite this act of GOD delay of the retrial (the Business Manager is supposed to be presumed innocent until found guilty, thus the initial reinstatement decision by the ALRB)

The trials for the members charged with the "causing a work stoppage" ended during the 3rd hearing, as the lawyer Simon Renouf recognized the "unfair" procedure that was occurring. This too led to the IBEW being brought to the Alberta Labour Relations Board for violating the Alberta Labour Law of not providing the members with a fair trial.

Oddly enough, apparently, the IBEW did not come with a proposal to resolve the issue of "unfair" trial procedures. Instead they "SHOCKINGLY" offered a lesser guilty plea?! They offered to suspend the members from regular union meetings for 3 years instead of expelling them???!!! Can you believe that??? I can't!! But supposedly this is the word on the street.

Now just how the hell and what kind of balls do you got to have to dish out a guilty verdict at the Labour Board ESPECIALLY when the charged members did not even have a trial yet???!!!

So the decision from the Alberta Labour Relations Board for those members has not come yet. To send them back to an IBEW trial that has already determined thier guilty penalty would be UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

And we are waiting for the IBEW retrial decision for our Business Manager to come out this coming in 2 weeks or so.

comments: Local 424 - Alberta cannot fills calls, too much work

Union contractors are advertising through the newspapers since Local Union 424 cannot fill the calls. Good to see that all the halls in Canada are enjoying full employment since we cannot get any travellers? I hope that all Canadian IBEW members who are willing to seek employment here in Alberta have been given the opportunity to do so.
The next step is for these contractors to seek foreign workers! I would hope that Local 424 calls the Locals down in the States if we cannot provide through other Canadian Locals. JOBS JOBS JOBS

comments: " We earnestly invite all workers belonging to our trade to come forward, join our ranks and help increase our numbers, until there is no one left working at our trade outside our Brotherhood . . ."

A statement made to a company organized (while in the process and posted on this web site), that said, after a lay-off due to our employers hatred for those that voted "YES" we find ourselves without work and on the bottom of the out of work list meaning that no job is available for me and your new brothers, and our families do not eat! I have now been out of work for 6 months, cannot use my former employer as a reference when potential non-union employers ask what I've been doing for the last few years. I do not qualify for the sub-fund I have three children and get a crap cheque of $766.00 from E.I every two weeks, not even enough to pay my rent/gas/bills/food etc.

I am by no means a rat. I do not hate the union however I cannot believe an apprentice could have a 1998 out of work date in 2004 or a journeyman a 93 out of work date in the year of 2004, I personally know that some of these brothers continuously work non-union to work on their out of work date at the hall to get first crack at the "BEST CALL" then burn them because they don't like the site, I have seen them and worked with them (non-union), its hurting us all. So there you have it. Please could someone let me know is this how the union should work?????? Because allot of us are hurting for work! And we will not burn a call. So don't you. I'll do the work.

Whenever I come everybody is always at some meeting, the only person there is the secretary Linda, who doesnt know when these meetings will end. The only way she said to reach anyone is to book an appointment. The people there never ask you of any information or to call you back, they only say to come back later. But I think the Union is a place where you can talk to someone without an appointment. You must be more friendly and creative. Your burocracy pushes people away.

Comments: Hello brothers and sisters of 1739.Just thought that I,d drop a quick and friendly hows it going from a 424 brother living in Banff. My father was a member with your local before his death. He was Mike Lee.I didn,t get into the trade until late but have been a brother in 424 for about 2 1/2 years.Only wish that dad could have been around to see that.We have a hard time selling union in this province...people are pretty brainwashed about the whole idea. For me...theres no going back. When I,m back that way I,d love to drop in and say hello personally. All the best Brothers and Sisters Joe Lee 424
